What Cellular Data Plan is Right for You?

When connecting to MyWay RTK, each user needs to have a data plan with their cellular provider. It’s important to know how much data you’ll need when you purchase a cellular plan. If you don’t know the amount of data you’re expecting to use, you could end up paying for more data than you need.

To give users an idea how much data they need, below are a couple of users that ran on the MyWay RTK network in 2011:

User Mountpoint Used Total Hours Total Data Used MB Per Hour
Subscriber 1 MYWAYRTK_LEGACY (CMR+) 179.6 105.3MB 0.6MB per Hour
Subcriber 2 MYWAYRTK_GLONASS (RTCM3.0 w/ Glonass) 222.1 228.2MB 1MB per Hour

When looking at purchasing a data plan from your cellular provider, you will typically come across the following plans:
100MB, 300MB, 1GB and 5GB. It takes 1024MB (megabytes) to make 1GB (gigabyte). So, how do you know how many GB of data you’ll need to purchase?

Knowing what mountpoint you’re using and how many hours you’ll use, will help you when it comes time to purchase a data plan. For example, if you are planning on being connected for 300 hours and you’re using MYWAYRTK_LEGACY (CMR+), then you will use approximately 180MB of data. You’ll be able to estimate how much data you’ll use, and you won’t end up paying for more than you need. Also, look into the options for prepaid plans, as they could save you even more money in the long run.
